Olympic Games 2024: Which festivals will be affected?

Summer is undoubtedly the best-known period for hosting various music festivals, especially electronic music festivals. But this year, the organization of the Olympic Games is threatening its festivals, which are renowned for their excellent entertainment. The reasons are simple and understandable, so there’s no need to panic. It may well be that these two categories of entertainment event will coexist. Nevertheless, what does or could the summer of 2024 look like?

The 2024 Olympic Games

The Olympic torch relay is a custom, a tradition that is still unavoidable and that takes us all back to the roots of the sporting games. To this end, the city of Paris will ensure the 2024 edition, the relay of this Olympic flame as well as the perpetuation of this tradition for several days.
At the risk of digressing from the main subject of this article, this event, whose celebration is intended to be international, will transform the city of Paris into a global platform for the promotion of sporting performance and prowess. For the occasion, various activities were delayed or even cancelled. These include some of the biggest and most entertaining events that keep the whole of France buzzing throughout the summer months. These events with a summer connotation are obliged to meet the requirements imposed by the hosting of the 2024 edition of the Olympic Games. As such, what are the reasons behind the postponement and cancellation of its electronic music festivals?

Electronic music festival cancellations and postponements: what are the reasons?

Just like its various electronic music festivals, the Olympic Games require the mobilization of a large number of police and gendarmes. The latter will be mobilized for security purposes and to monitor the smooth running of events. This means that the police will no longer be available to ensure the security of the various festivals, which is vital to their smooth running.

As a result, many of the venues initially known for summer festivities will be used for the Olympic Games. As these festivals can no longer be held at their usual address or location, they will either have to move to a new site, or change dates. Needless to say, this will have a major impact on the various activities involved in staging, organizing and mobilizing infrastructure. In addition, some concert halls will be unable to host artists or festivals because they have been requisitioned for the purposes of the JO. These include the Stade de France and the Accor Arena, which will be home to athletics, rugby, gymnastics and basketball.
To this end, a calendar has been drawn up to reflect the requirements of the various festivals. Thus, from June 23 to July 17 and from August 12 to 23, the various festivals will be maintained, provided that they limit the mobilization of police or military forces. Then, during the period of Olympic activities proper, i.e. from July 18 to August 11 and from August 24 to September 8, very large-scale festivals will not be able to take place.

In addition, other more technical reasons force the cancellation and/or postponement of these festivals. The first is hotel availability. Indeed, with the arrival of the Olympic Games, many hotels in Paris and elsewhere in France are already fully booked. Festival-goers will therefore not be welcomed during this period. Also, the choice of dates could lead to complex situations between major musical events. It’s all about competition. More objectively, which festivals are being maintained and which are not?
